Elderberry syrup 125ml

Elderberry rob or syrup is a traditional remedy for treating colds and sore throats as elderberries contain vitamin C and are anti-viral, anti-inflammatory and have been shown in many studies to reduce the length of flu symptoms. Elderflowers are thought to help you sweat out colds and flu, and echinacea purpurea root is well known for supporting the immune system, giving this syrup an extra boost for treating colds and flu. 
 
Cinnamon, cloves, ginger root and liquorice are infused into it too, along with added fresh lemon juice. Cinnamon is great for easing coughs and colds as it can clear mucus and is warming, as are cloves, and both are soothing for the digestive system. Cloves are antiseptic and both cloves and cinnamon are antiviral. They also taste great! Both can be uterine stimulants and so should be avoided in large quantities during pregnancy. Liquorice is an anti-viral, demulcant and expectorant. It is traditionally used to treat respiratory infections including coughs and bronchitis. It also adds a little sweetness of it's own.
 
This is homemade in small batches, heated to destroy the toxins of the elderberry seeds and further preserved in a traditional hot water bath after bottling. Refrigerate after opening, where it will last for at least 3 months. 
 
This syrup is suitable for children (a quarter to half a teaspoon), although the NHS issued a warning against children taking echinacea until the age of 12 in case they are allergic to it.  
 
Elderberries and liquorice are both mildly laxative so it is recommended to take the syrup once a day as an immunity booster or at the start of a cold or flu, but this can be increased to three times a day if necessary. If pregnant the advice is not to take this.
